BEFORE YOU SELL

Make Sure Your Title is Ready to Transfer

Key details to review before selling your vehilce.

Before submitting your vehicle title, take a moment to review the details below. A correctly completed title helps avoid delays and ensures a smooth transfer.

  1. All Required Signatures

The title must be signed by all owners listed on the document. Pay close attention to how ownership is listed (such as AND or OR), as this determines who is required to sign.

  2. Special Signing Circumstances

If an owner is unable to sign due to special circumstances, additional documentation may be required. Please see the links below for more information.

  3. No Active Liens

Your title should not list any active liens. A clear title helps prevent delays during the sale process. If a lien appears on the title, a signed lien release from the lender must be provided - either on the title itself or as a separate document.

  4. Check for Errors

Your title must be free of mistakes. As an official legal document, corrections can cause complications or invalidate the transfer. If you realize an error has been made, stop immediately - do not cross anything out or rewrite it. Take your title to the DMV or contact our team for help.

PRO TIPS

Signing Over a Vehicle Title

  1. You should sign your title with the name that is printed on the front. Meaning, if your full name, middle initial, and last name is listed, you should sign and print as a seller in the same manner.
  2. Use blue or black ink only.
  3. Take your time when transferring your title.
  4. Mistakes happen. If you make an error, don’t correct it yourself, reach out to our team for title help!

  1. The title must be in your name, with no cross outs or errors.
  2. All liens must be released. If there is a lien listed on your title, it must be signed off on the title or provide a separate lien release document.
  3. You must sign as the seller per our title instructions.
You must sign the title as it is shown on the front of the title. If you do not, the title will be void and you may need a correction form or duplicate title.
Yes. If there are 2 owners listed on the front of a title, the majority of the time, both people will need to sign as seller. If there is an ‘or’ in between the names, only 1 signature is required.

Different states require different paperwork. Usually this involves a copy of the death certificate, executor rights paperwork, and the signed title. If your car was last registered, titled and being picked up in California instead of obtaining a duplicate title, we have a quicker solution for you. We can accept a Reg 262 and Reg 227 in place of the pink slip. The Reg 262 is a secure form that needs to be obtained at your local DMV or if you call us at 1-877-957-2277 we can mail you one. Together these forms can be used in lieu of a title.
