Selling your car shouldn’t be complicated. At You Call We Haul, we make sure you understand exactly what documents you’ll need so you can get paid quickly — and confidently.
While the requirements vary slightly from state to state, most vehicle sales follow the same basic rules. Here’s what to prepare before your buyer arrives.
1. Your Vehicle Title
Your title is the single most important document when selling your car. It proves ownership and allows the legal transfer of the vehicle to a new buyer.
When completing your title:
Sign exactly as your name appears on the front of the title.
Use blue or black ink only.
All owners listed must sign. If the title shows “AND,” both owners must sign; if it says “OR,” one signature is usually sufficient.
Ensure there are no liens. If your title lists a lienholder, you’ll need a signed lien release either on the title or as a separate document.
Avoid cross-outs or corrections. Mistakes can void the title. If you make an error, stop — call our title help team at 1-877-957-2277 before proceeding.
Sometimes, life events or paperwork quirks make title transfer a little more complex. Here’s how to navigate them:
Name Change: If your name has changed since the car was titled, sign exactly as it appears on the front. Signing differently may require a correction form or duplicate title
Two Owners: Most states require both owners to sign. Check for an “AND” or “OR” between names to know whether one or both must sign.
Deceased Owner: You’ll usually need a copy of the death certificate, executor paperwork, and a signed title. Our team can confirm your state’s exact requirements.
Vehicle Not Registered in Your Name: The car doesn’t have to be registered in your name, but the title must be. Call our processing center to verify eligibility.
Signed-Over or Altered Titles: Do not cross out or write over names. Once a title is signed over to someone else, it must first be transferred into your name before sale.
With over 20 years of experience, You Call We Haul is a trusted resource for resolving title complications — from lien releases to estate transfers.
If you can’t find your title, you still have options. Most states allow you to request a duplicate title or use alternate proof of ownership.
For example, in California, you can use the DMV forms Reg 262 and Reg 227 instead of the pink slip. You can obtain these forms at your local DMV — or call us, and we can mail them to you.
Every state is different, so check your local DMV’s website or use ourstate-by-state title guide for the latest details.
4. Valid Identification
Have a valid photo ID — like your driver’s license — that matches the name on the title. This confirms ownership and protects against fraudulent transfers.
5. A Bill of Sale (Sometimes Required)
Some states require a bill of sale listing the VIN, sale price, and buyer/seller information. Even if your state doesn’t mandate it, it’s smart to keep one for your records.
6. Prepare for Pickup
Before your buyer arrives:
Remove personal items and license plates (if required by your state).
Gather all keys, remotes, and accessories.
Have your paperwork ready for verification.
Once everything checks out, you’ll receive payment on the spot and a confirmation email with your receipt.

Sustainable Practices as a Car Owner
As Americans are trying to reduce their carbon footprint, sustainability has become a hot topic the past few years. Here are some sustainable practices to keep in mind as a car owner:
Properly dispose oil from your car – Many auto repair shops will dispose your contained oil for you to use to recycle or properly dispose. Do not dump your oil in drains, sewers, or even the lawn. Avoiding these actions avoids the risk of polluting water and soil.
Recycle used or worn out tires- Instead of throwing out your old tires, recycle them at a local recycling center where they can then be used for projects. These projects include the creation of local playgrounds, sandboxes, and much more.
Check Tire Pressure – Most of the newer models have automated tire pressure gauges, but for older vehicles, it is important to check the tire pressure on a regular basis. Not only is it safer to drive, but tires that are properly inflated save 10 cents per a gallon of gas as well as reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
