What to do with License Plates

You have finally been able to sell your car but you’re not sure what to do with your vehicle’s old license plates. Before you hand the car over to the new owner, be sure to check your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles for the guidelines regarding license plates after selling a car. License plates are required per state and need to be attached to all vehicles for identification and security purposes. The plates help police officers identify the owner of a vehicle if it gets involved in traffic violations or accidents.

After you sell a car, you’ll want to be sure you follow the rules in your state on what to do with your plates. If you don’t, you could still be liable for the vehicle and potentially be responsible for fines or even have your license suspended. Be sure to let your state know that you’ve sold your car. Most states suggest that you remove your license plates prior to turning the vehicle over to the new owner. Some states require that the plates stay on the vehicle, while others will allow you to keep your plates to be transferred over to a new car.

You Call We Haul is based out of Rhode Island. According to the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles, you can transfer your license plates to a new vehicle as long as the name on the registration is the same. If you do not plan on transferring the plates, remove them and return them to your local RI DMV.
