Minnesota license plates

Do you have old license plates sitting around, or are you selling a vehicle through You Call We Haul and don’t know what to do with your plates? We can help!

Minnesota has different laws than most states regarding license plates… so pay attention!

Selling your Vehicle

If you are selling your vehicle, you are almost always required to keep the license plate on the vehicle. When the sale is complete, the license plate, registration, and taxes are assigned to the buyer. Please note that the seller is responsible for reporting the sale of the vehicle within 10 days after the sale. This can be done either online or through mail.

Old License Plates

If you kept an old license plate and did not transfer it to an approved vehicle, you should recycle it as scrap metal-don’t just leave it in your recycling bin!

Specialized License Plates

If you have a specialized license plate, you may be able to keep it. However, in order to do so, you must complete an Application for Special Plates. This will have you fill out some information about the vehicle that you would like your plate to go on. Please note that the vehicle you choose MUST be registered in your name!

In Minnesota, you can mail your Record of Sale stub to any of the Driver and Vehicle Services locations.
